The Periyar Sanctuary in Idukki district of Kerala extends to 777 Sq.kms. lies 2200 m above sea level. The land is encompassed by the part of high mountain ranges, the Western Ghats, in the North Central part is the Periyar Lake - a vast reservoir of water created by a dam on the Periyar River.
